We first came across a big walled in drop which we couldn't inspect properly.

We made an arduous portage of this and came across big grade 5+ in a deep gorge with siphons all over the place. Hmm. The disconcerting thing was that it was all clearly paddleable, just a step too far for us.
Ergo...we concluded that we were in Commitment Canyon by mistake, and that we had too much water. We climbed out.
Depressingly, it later emerged that we had been in exactly the right place, and that the water level was in the acceptable range (78 on gauge). To add insult, apparently some locals (Stuart Smith) ran it that same afternoon.
Chris and I planned to return a week later early in the morning, but the valley was closed. Phew.
