Geographic Information Systems - Desktop

ESRI has been the leader for many years, but the open source movement is making gains. QGIS is a great free and open Desktop GIS solution. As a professional in the GIS industry, I recommend having an intimate knowledge of both.

QGIS is excellent! Couple it with other open source software like Grass GIS and they can do just about everything that ArcGIS (ESRI) can do...though in a slightly different way.

Exactly - Open Source is very competitive!
