My Vinyl Record Setup - Beginners

in vinyl •  8 years ago

I got into vinyl records almost 3 years ago building my collection from nothing.

Thought it would be cool to share my setup for those that have been curious about getting into vinyl music, but unsure about budgeting the setup.

My setup is truly cost conscience. I went with hardware that was the greatest bang for the buck.

Using some book shelf speakers I had from a previous bookshelf stereo system, I went out and bought a turn tablet, speaker amplifier and pre-amp (which is optional); oh, you'll also need a set of RCA cables.

My turntable is from Audio Technica AT-LP60, entry level, nothing special. It came at $100 (at the time) and highly rated on Amazon.
The next item I bought was the speak amplifier. You'll need the amp to power the speakers. The speaker amp was made by Lepai, a 20-watt power amp mostly used in car audio, but this model was sold with an AC adapter. Again, popular and highly rated on Amazon.

In between the turn table and power amp goes the Preamp, it's not necessary but I read that having an external preamp is better than using the preamp built into the turn table. For my setup, the Audio Technica AT-LP60 has a built in preamp so it's not required.

The audio was pushed through some old existing speakers I already owned, AWIA. The AWIA speakers were 3-way and sounded just fine. After a year or so, I upgraded my speakers to a pair of Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf speakers made by Pioneer. The Pioneer speakers weren't expensive but offered great sound at a low cost. I'll post more on the speakers later on.

Here's a list of what I purchased (please don't flag me for linking to Amazon, it's for reference):
Audio Technica AT-LP60 $79.99 USD - http://amzn.to/2p5Bqli
Pyle-Pro PP444 Preamp (optional) $14.87 USD - http://amzn.to/2pB5u9J
Lepai 20 watt power amp $29.95 USD - http://amzn.to/2oNSxFC
Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf speakers $129.99 USD - http://amzn.to/2qgymQX
