Surgery for back pain

There are various treatments that can be used to treat back pain. Some treatments are ideal for mild back pains, but for extreme back pains, surgery is the most recommended option. The doctors usually recommend or prescribe surgery as treatment for back pain after all the other treatment options have been tried out and proved to be ineffective. The main drawback associated with surgery as treatment is that there is no surety or guarantee that after one undergoes the treatment, their back pain will be totally healed. Surgery is a risk since the results are not 100% guaranteed to be effective. Before undergoing surgery for back pain, it is important that the patient conducts thorough research about the procedure to know exactly what they are getting into.

Advantages of surgery for back pain

The main benefit that can be accrued to having back surgery is the elimination or relieving of the extreme back pain. This is the main benefit of back surgery, but there are other accompanying benefits like enhanced physical fitness, reduced intake of medication meant to relieve pain, individuals are in better moods, they are able to move around better and the individual might even be in a position to go back to the tasks they were doing before their back got injured. Once an individual is able to treat the back pain and they are back to pursuing their careers there is a high probability that they will be much more productive than they initially were.

The risks of surgery for back pain

The doctors will always alert the patient before the surgery procedure about the possible risks that might arise during the procedure. At times there might be no possible risks, but every surgery is a risk, so there is always a possibility of one or several occurring. Most back surgeries are complications free during and after the procedure. All surgeries including back surgery are prone to risks such as heart attacks, blood clotting in the legs or lungs, infections, stroke, and bleeding. There are some extreme risks like paralysis, loss of bladder and bowel control, severe pain, dysfunction sexually and nerve damage. The risks experienced during a back surgery or any other surgery mostly depends on the health condition of an individual. It is these health factors that pose risks even to the surgeries that are considered risk free.

Some existing health conditions in a patient can be the result of the complications that arise during surgery. The age of the patient, type of surgery and other factors can also contribute to a complication during surgery which is why the surgeon or doctor is charged with the role of identifying and making these threats and complications known to the patient before undertaking the surgery. The patient and the doctor should comprehensively cover every aspect about the surgical procedure including details like the drawbacks, necessary care after surgery, benefits, duration of time taken and the risks or complications that might occur. The patient should be fully aware that the back surgery might treat the back pain or it might not.
