Vishakhapattanam Gas Disaster 2020

in vishakhapattanam •  4 years ago

Early morning , speculated around 3A.M IST(Indian) , 7MAY2020/12020H.E.C .. Deadly #Styrene #gas leaked from a facility / factory of #LGPolymers at Vizag/ #Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh State, India.

11 people have been killed in the incident including Hundreds have been seriously injured and taken to healthcare facilities , National Disaster and Rescue teams of NDRF have been deployed, more than 5KM area surrounding the facility have been affected and got contaminated , Local Police have launched FIR and investigating the incident according to official report and news media. Many birds , animals and trees also died because of the poisonus gas in the area and local environment got heavily effected. Numerous Dead bodies of humans and dogs were found in the open streets.

This is the second disastrous #chemical leak incident after An American company DOW Chemical Company's chemical facility leaked poisonous gas in Bhopal in 1984. When hundreds and thousands of people got effected and died due to the leak and fell in to long term illnesses and gene defects.

Some news agencies like ABP Ananda , Zee 24 ghanta and news18 Bangla is reporting , this happened due to no maintenance workers been able to come to that facility due to ongoing #COVID19 #Coronavirus Lockdown. And refrigeration equipment failure.

earlier some reports emerged that authorities told the people of contaminated area to stay homes at the begining! My question is why ? When chemical leak or attack of this magnitude happens , the first thing every single authority and people should do is , evacuate evacuate , evacuate. Later NDRF stated that they evacuated around 500 people from the area but it's still not enough. Surely no authority in the area has gas masks or protective gear like hazmat suits to protect all the people of 5km radius from harmful chemicals and it's effects , where the incident happened. By not evacuating enough people , in my opinion they are endangering the lives of those people.

Plus, I also think there was negligence among the LG Polymers employees , who somehow possibly triggered this diaster knowing about the Styrene gas storage in their facility and refrigeration unit not being maintained for almost a month when experts stated it should be contained below a specific temperature set by that refrigeration unit in liquid form.

In the end, those who are responsible must be brought to light.
