Lava flowing down the slopes of Mayon Volcano lit up the sky in albay on monday night. Netizens who live near the volcano have shared their photos of the erupting volcano. One of them is Department of Science and Technology employee Richard Esplana, who snapped the photo from Brgy.Tamaoyan in Legazpi City. Esplana who lives within the 10-kilometers danger zone, advised his fellow bicolanos to tune in to government advisories and follow the precautionary measures.
Mayon is under Alert Level 3,meaning increased tendency towards hazardous eruption, Phivolcs research specialist Paul Alanis said More than 12,000 residents living near the volcano have already fled to evacuation center.
Mayon known for its near perfect cone, last erupted in 2014. Its almost destructive eruption was in february 1841,when lava flows buried town and killed 1,200 people.
A thick cloud of gray and white smoke filled the skies near Mount Mayon, the country's most active volcano, following a lava collapse monday morning. The Phivolcs said it monitored an ash column coming from the volcano due to lava collapse. Residents in the 7 kilometers extended danger zone near the volcano have been evacuated as alert level 3 has been raised by authorities on sunday.
Authorities advised people to cover their noses and mouths with a damp, clean cloth or dust mask if they were exposed to ash from the eruptions. Aircraft are also told to avoid flying close to the volcano. Mayon, a tourist attraction because of its near-perfect cone shape, showed a bright crater glow on Sunday, signifying lava had started to flow from the crater.
Manila's airport authorities said Cebu Pacific had canceled flights to nearby Legazpi City for a second day on Monday, citing bad weather. Philippine Airlines said it had not canceled any flights to and from Legazpi, but there were some delays.
