Just want to call this out...

So I was watching the votes over at my latest post because I'm a self conscious dork and I noticed a vote from both @lafona and @lafona-miner ... I mean, I like positive votes, but having a second account to "mine" votes?

The account is for mining Steem not votes. There are 21 witnesses who monitor and verify transactions on the network. They are voted in by Steem users except one. This one witness is chosen randomly during each round. If chosen, you receive some Steem.

I didn't know about this randomly selected thing. thanks.

Actually I was going to discuss this eventually to get an idea of how the community feels. The current setup is a hackish attempt to vote with most of my stake without having to log in and out of multiple accounts. The multiple accounts are, as onceuponatime suggested, a result from activity mining steem in earlier days. For a while, I was using the cli wallet to vote with the lafona-miner account manually but that was very tedious so eventually I created a little copycat bot to mimic the voting actions of my main account. It does have the unfortunate side effect of making my opinion look like two people on the weighting algorithm for the "hot" sorting algorithm, but hopefully this effect will diminish as the number of voters increases. For that reason I haven't added any other accounts for now. I don't think it is a valid attack vector for anything other than maybe gaming the "hot" algorithm, as splitting accounts typically reduces overall voting weight or rewards in one way or another.

Now that I've heard some of the explanation, I get it. I wasn't trying to rally the troops, it was more a question of why is this okay. I agree that as more users come on board it will have a very diminished effect. Sorry if I sounded more confrontational than I intended.

Sounds like you may not know what lafona-miner is all about. I doubt that it has anything to do with "votemining". He was probably mining steem before it switched to mostly dpos, and he may still be mining for the small percent of steem available through POW mining.

Well maybe I am mistaken then. I've only been active here for a few days. It just seemed odd to me, especially considering all the hub-bub about the voting rewards lately. I just wanted to make sure that light was shed on it in case it could be viewed as some kind of abuse.

Having more than one account is actually necessary if you are mining for POW. When mining if you are lucky and find a POW, your account is moved onto the queue and over the next ~2hours you move to the top of the queue where you are rewarded with your Steem. But while moving through the queue your miner is idle since an account cannot be in the queue twice. If you have a second account the miner will switch to that account and start mining while the first account moves through the queue.

I've seen that too. One for "I liked it" and one for "here have a quarter"?
This trend points out the need for a tip button.

I thought the whole point of payouts for upvotes was why we don't have a tip button... but hey, as long as it isn't some kind of abuse of the system and the admins/mods are cool with it, I'll take the payment.

there are bots...some people have multiple accounts
