TechRadar has published a very good overview of VPN 2 days ago - The best VPN service in 2018: https://www.techradar.com/vpn/best-vpn

From their list of recommended VPNs, I have been using ExpressVPN, Windscribe, NordVPN and CyberGhost.

The cheapest one with great reputation is https://nordvpn.com which has received many awards.

NordVPN is based in Panama, as the country has no mandatory data retention laws and does not participate in the Five Eyes or Fourteen Eyes alliances.

As of June 2018, NordVPN runs over 4,410[16] remote servers in 62 countries, with the largest numbers of servers located in United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Australia, France and Sweden.[17] Besides general-use VPN servers, the provider offers servers for specific purposes, including P2P sharing, double encryption[18], connection to the TOR anonymity network, and protection against DDoS attacks.

In 2017, NordVPN launched a number of obfuscated servers designed for using VPN under heavy Internet restrictions.[20] These servers allow accessing the service in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and China. Although the Chinese government has been attempting to restrict encrypted communications for years,[22][23] millions of people still rely on the technology to bypass China’s censorship system, known as the Great Firewall

one NordVPN account can secure up to 6 devices at the same time.

Also check out https://substratum.net The open beta can be found here. You can technically use it at a negative cost. But it's still beta and the UX is nowhere near smooth.

I use Windscribe quite a lot. Some servers are free, but if you need more of them from other countries as well, you can upgrade the service. Here is the link: https://windscribe.com/ Check it out, @knircky.

I used to use "Hide My Ass" and "Pure VPN", but not sure what are they doing at the present moment.

I have been using windscribe from last couple of yrs. They do have a free plan but i bought thr lifetime membership for 30$ then.

If u need to download stuff from torrent then use bitport.

I use / used Hide Me.

They have a free trial option that last XXX amount of minutes and when the free trial is up their downloadable client will give you the option to purchase. If you select NO the free option kicks back in again. I no longer have a VPN on my laptop but if I did I would certainly use Hide Me again.

Bildschirmfoto 2018-11-17 um 09.24.20.png@knircky Yeah, it is free as well, but there are good plans as well: PROTON VPN - for me till now the best VPN Service- using myself since 2 years when we travel. I was using some month the free version, but for 5 € per month, get more counties and better speed. there are more plans, but more me this plan is already enough. They have app for all, IOS, OSX, Windows and android.Proton Company have as well the the high secure email service, so I think they know what they do with the VPN Service and this is one of the very good one.

I would strongly recommend you to explore the VPN deals at StackSocial- https://stacksocial.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=vpn&aid=a-69zejqtt You can find some of the top VPN solutions and that too at really low cost. On top of that, you get 10% discount on your first order too.

So, depending on if you need it for anything else, you could set up a personal VPS and run your own VPN. That's what I do. It's only $5/mo for a basic VPS, and it's awesome that you can connect unlimited devices unlike other VPN services. Plus, you don't have to store logs, and you have all the control. Additionally, you can use the VPS for other things like syncing IoT devices, backups, etc....it's a great option.
