Does Black Mean Evil? Racism in the English Language

Today, the English language is one of the most widely spoken languages on earth. According to an information available on Babbel.com, out of the world's approximately 7.5 billion inhabitants, 1.5 billion speak English — that's 20% of the Earth's population. This means that one out of every five persons randomly selected speak the English language.

The pervasiveness of the English language, of course, is not historically unconnected with colonialism, a period in which the British crown and other powerful European countries exercised economic and political control over some non-European territories.

As it would be excepted, the inhabitants of the colonized territories were politically and culturally subjugated. Consequently, the culture and the language of the colonialists were forced on the indigenous people who soon became English speakers.

As flawless and robust as the English language may seem on the surface, it is a language which systemically support racism. The word, Black, is often used to represent evil, bad luck, misbehavior, illegal acts, violence, backwardness, etc. On the other hand, White is used represent purity, legality, progress, conformity, tenderness, etc. Unfortunately, these facts are no coincidences. Over the years, it appears, racism has crept into the English language creating a black and white dichotomy.

When Black Means the Opposite of Good

Now, let us briskly look at a list of words which suggest that black means the opposite of good. Here are a few examples:

  • Blacklist: a list of people, organizations, etc., that are disapproved of or that are to be punished or avoided.

  • Black sheep: someone who does not fit in with the rest of a group and is often considered to be a troublemaker or an embarrassment.

  • Black hand: a lawless secret society engaged in criminal activities (as terrorism or extortion).

  • Black Maria: an enclosed motortruck used by police to carry prisoners.

  • Blackmail: the crime of threatening to tell secret information about someone unless the person being threatened gives you money or does what you want.

  • Black market: a system through which things are bought and sold illegally.

  • Black Widow: a poisonous American spider.

When White Means the Opposite of Evil

Now, let us consider a list of words which suggest that white means the opposite of evil. Here are a few examples:

  • White list: a list of approved or favoured items. Compare blacklist.

  • White hat: one who is admirable and honorable.

  • White House: a residence of the president of the United States.

  • White way: a brilliantly lighted street or avenue especially in a city's business or theater district.

  • Whitewash: to defeat (an opponent) easily by winning every game, point, etc.

  • White room: clean room.

Conclusion

Language is the vehicle through which cultural traits are expressed. Therefore, to have certain words in the English language which uphold racism through a parallel, lopsided black and white dichotomy is, I fear, an affirmation of racial inequality. And, as long as these words remain in the English dictionary, the thick cloud of racism hovering upon the world may never clear.

Racial harmony is an important part of my country as multi-racial society where everyone must be equally treated. Racism is not allowed especially for those who work in the government sector, they can get fired for being racism. Everyone must be treated equally in my country and it is part of the country pledge.

Stop fussing over language ,even in ancient African, indian etc languages and culture. Black as a figure of speech has always been associated with evil, plague or warlords. Mind you as a figure of speech, to some extent in place of color of non living or abstract..... Because it holds synonyms to darkness.... Even the nok culture (c. 1500 BC — c. 300 AD) one of the earliest had scribbles of dark elements which was in the land , these were way before colonisation ......

Am not accurate on these,

. My point is stop thinking colour and always trying to change or disproof hierarchy you know nothing about....Racism that don't evidently exist isn't your problem or what you should tackle..... Better your self first and you would empower and change life unconsciously without having to tell someone his medium of interaction is the problem.....

My point is stop thinking colour and always trying to change or disproof hierarchy you know nothing about....Racism that don't evidently exist isn't your problem or what you should tackle..

Have you seen the video wherein banana was thrown at Daniel Alves on the pitch? Do you ever read anything on apathied or on the civil rights movement in the US? Go and read up and come back here to tell us whether racism exists or not!

I think you have an important point there. Nonetheless, as another commenter pointed out, the origin of these are usually not racist:

As people feared dark places (dark and black) and didn't fear white places (white and bright). This was probably even something that gave birth to racism in the first place.

But, I don't agree with the rest of the other commenter since Racism is a serious problem in the world which has to be solved.

Thanks for your valuable contributions. They are very much received. It is logical that people feared darkness and do not fear light or brightness and may tend to associate it with good or evil. But these are inexcusable in regards to most of the words highlighted above.

The etymology of these words suggests that they came up in the 17th century when the slave trade was in full gear. Before the slave trade and colonialism, there were no such words as blacklist and Black Maria, etc. So, racism should be addressed because it is a serious matter.

I checked after the origin of a bunch of these words, but they don't seem to have much in common with slavery (Besides black market probably) Blacklist was invented by the British throne but affected only white people, so the term probably didn't originate from black as in color of the skin, similar black sheep originates from every now and then sheeps being born black but their wool doesn't sell as well.

Still, Racism has to be eliminated, it's ridiculous that there are still racist people at all, but, I believe that if we mark and label people and things too fast as racism this does not help to eliminate it, it even makes it harder because people who already have tendencies feel that something wrong is happening and might rebel against this.

Not only English but almost every other European and Asian languages black is termed as bad. I am sure this originated from racist mindset. This world is full of racists persons. It is the misfortune of this world.
