What is a black soot?

The word "soot" sounds so simple and harmless. ... Soot includes the fine black particles, chiefly composed of carbon, produced by incomplete combustion of coal, oil, wood, or other fuels. Soot can consist of acids, chemicals, metals, soils, and dust.

The Nigerian city of Port Harcourt used to be known as “The Garden City” because of it's soaring palm trees and green open spaces.
But since late last year, black soot has been falling from the sky, scaring and angering residents of the oil hub who claim nothing is being done to protect their health.the soot is mostly pronounced in the morning hours, especially when you run your hand across your car. The soot appeared in noimages (15).jpegvember last year, clouds became a hazy grey and more people were seen wearing protective face masks,

What is black carbon soot?
Black carbon consists of pure carbon in several linked forms. It is formed through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biofuel, and biomass, and is emitted in both anthropogenic and naturally occurring soot. Black carbon causes human morbidity and premature mortality.

Why soot is bad?
Soot causes several environmental problems, such as haze and the acidification of lakes and rivers. Haze is formed when sunlight interacts with small particles in the atmosphere. Soot is the primary cause of haze, which severely decreases visibility in port Harcourt city and national parks.images (13).jpegair.jpg
