ANKARA - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan criticized the UN as helpless seeing Israeli troops kill more than 60 Palestinian demonstrators on the Gaza border. He called the UN a collapse.

The death toll is data since Monday when dozens of Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli troops during a "Great Return March" demo. The demo that marks the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day coincides with the relocation of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem that is increasingly fostering the anger of Palestinians. image

Turkey has become one of the most vocal critics of the use of deadly force by Israeli forces against protesters. Ankara has called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to hold an emergency meeting in Istanbul on Friday (18/05/2018) tomorrow.

Erdogan said the majority of the international community had failed to react to the events in Gaza. According to him, if the international community remained silent, it would open a very dangerous door.

"In the face of all these events, the UN has ended. (The body has been) exhausted and collapsed," said Erdogan, quoted by Reuters on Thursday (5/17/2018).

"If Israeli intimidation is filled with more silent attitudes, the world will quickly be dragged into chaos where thuggery occurs," he said.

The crisis in Gaza has also triggered a diplomatic row between Turkey and Israel. Ankara has expelled the Israeli ambassador. The government of the Jewish state replied by expelling the Turkish consul in charge of Jerusalem.

According to Erdogan, the head of his staff office and his foreign ministry has been working to evacuate the wounded from Gaza. "Turkey will stand in Palestine, regardless of price," Erdogan said, referring to Ankara's perceived impact on Palestine.

"Even if the whole world turns a blind eye, we will not allow the atrocities of Israel, we will continue with our Palestinian brothers, not only with our hearts but with all our resources," he said.

"We will never let Jerusalem be stolen by Israel."
