The Story of Walk-about Wally

The Story of Walk-about Wally.
It was a hot summer day in August when Smokey the momma cat found the coolest and safest place to give birth to her litter; in a partial attic with ventilation, in the shadiest north facing part of the house.
Three weeks later, I heard some crying meows, investigation found a little gray and white kitten outside on the north side of the house. I looked up and saw the vents to the attic were open picked up the kitten and put it where the momma cat would find him.
Once more this happened and my husband and I decided if it happened again or if we heard mewling from the attic we would bring all the kittens down and take over the parenting of the little gray and white. Several days later there was distressed meowing from the attic space, my husband, a former fireman came to me and said, "I think there's a kitten stuck in the wall."
I crawled into the partial attic. I pulled out 5 little kits. The meowing continued, I could not locate the last kitten. My husband was removing the siding off the house, we found the gray and white kitten in the wall between the interior and exterior space. The kitten was going toward the vent hole and had fallen onto a support and not down to the house foundation. The little gray and white kitten had been saved! My husband called the kitten Wally. All of the kittens suffered temporary blindness from being in the attic. Wally took longer than the other kittens to see.
During the first days of feedings, Wally suffered seizures, on an epileptic scale they would have been considered grand mal. We figured that he had suffered some brain injury from his falls from the attic, and hoped that as he grew they would lessen or pass. They did lessen, thank you God.
Many feedings and play times later, Wally found a way out of the house. We were worried he'd had a seizure and got taken by a hawk. We looked under the house, across the road, we looked in the unused well. I called and cried, called and cried, when Wally appeared! Walking from around our fig trees. That's when Walk-about was added to his name.
Wally wasn't growing any where near the same rate as his siblings, he also would not eat cat food, wet or dry. The "no" list grew to everything except raw hamburger and a few licks of cheese sauce. So Wally got meat, and he was doing okay.
Wally enjoyed being outside on sunny days. We would keep track of where he was, but invariably, he would end up further away than I thought wise. Wally would follow either my husband or me around outside while we were working on the project of the day. One day, this little kitten, no bigger than a two month old kitten followed me more than 60 yards through overgrown grass! Wally was hanging with the big cats! What a sweet kitty to want to be with his humans (as long as there was sunshine too).
All was well until a day in November when Wally followed my husband out of the house. A neighbor pulled up and was talking with my husband, when he pulled away, Wally was partially under one of the wheels!!! It had rained heavily the day before and the ground was soft. Wally was not dead and after 20 excruciating hours he drank water, peed, ate meat and pooped. He was limping, but we felt that if we kept him away from the over enthusiastic playing of the other kittens he could be okay. Wally improved he could get himself to the water dish, and around in the yard to chase the sun.
Five days ago, something changed. We don't know what happened, but Wally wasn't moving as well, then he started to chew his hamburger, but spit it out, this morning he stopped drinking at around 10:30 a.m., Wally walked across the rainbow bridge.
I learned a valuable lesson from Wally. No matter what sit in the sunlight.
