I agree, the AI is shit, but then again we are still far from having (or wanting) very smart enemy minions. The best game I know that did it best was Metal Gear Solid 3.

Yeah, those two are definitely among the best of the shooter genre. Moving to other genres, have you played Odin Sphere? That game has a very good writing and I don't have many complaints about the gameplay.
