Social science (English: social science) or social science (UK: social studies) is a group of academic disciplines who study aspects related to human and social environment. This science is different from art and humanities because it emphasizes the use of scientific methods in studying human beings, including quantitative methods, and qualitative. The term also includes describing a wide range of field studies involving behavior, and human interaction in the present, and the past. Unlike social science in general, IPS does not focus on one topic in depth but provides a broad overview of society.

Social science, in studying aspects of society subjectively, inter-subjective, and objective or structural, previously considered less scientific when compared with the natural sciences. But now, some parts of social science have used a lot of quantitative methods. Similarly, the interdisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary approaches in social research to human behavior and social factors, and the environment that influenced it have led many natural science researchers to be interested in several aspects of the social science methodology. [1] The use of quantitative, and qualitative methods has been increasingly integrated in the study of human action and its implications, and its consequences.

Due to its simplified nature of social sciences, Indonesian IPS is used as a subject for elementary school (SD) students, and junior high school (SMP / SLTP). As for the levels above, ranging from high school (high school) and college, social sciences are studied based on branches in the science, especially the department or faculty that focuses on studying image
