Walk With Me 9: Litter Walk in Lincoln Park, Round 1.

in walkwithme •  7 years ago  (edited)

Lincoln Park is beautiful, and unfortunately an absolute dumping ground. We haven't spent time over there since the snow started melting, so we decided to run the dogs and bring a bag with just in case. Thank goodness we did.

Hiro is getting a bit chunky, haha! Unfortunately he isn't quite capable of grasping the concept of not wandering away, so he has to be leashed at all times when not in an enclosed area.

This is the entrance. I feel like we could spend several hours cleaning there. We didn't go there today, it's too cold and it's marshy.

One of the many bridges, Inari already has Ella pretty wiped out from chasing the ball.

Hey, that's pretty. Wait a second...

0408181831.jpg

Fixed it. ;)

There are so many pretty features in this park, we didn't even walk very far to see all of this.

It was about 32° today, the freezing point is nicer than we have had in over a week. Sparrow took the opportunity to shed her coat while we cleaned up.

Quick check for clowns. Safe!

That's a good 20 foot drop. Yikes!

This disk sled is so disappointing. The older generations teaching kids that it is okay to break your shit and leave it for someone else to clean up.

Way cool bridge.

0408181857.jpg

Now this was scary. When we were in the homeless shelter I taught my children to immediately notify me if they found a needle. We found three today.

Duluth is well known for Heroin. In fact, just a couple of weeks ago over 20 people were arrested for being a part of a dealer and supplier ring.

This one didn't even bother putting their cap back on. Interesting fact, when you contact the police to come and get them, they send the fire department instead. And they do not come immediately, they stop by the next time they have to respond to a call.

Cool building, looks like an old cottage. Not sure what they used to use it for. It's all boarded up, but it could just be for the winter.

Progress!

Willow taking a break to look adorable. It's a thing she does.

Final picture, no, we didn't do all of that, two bags were already there, someone else in the community has been cleaning up, too!

Good morning @hickorymack! Even out in the boonies, we have litter. Some of it just blows with the crazy high winds here in Kansas (we don't have to rake leaves - the wind takes care of that chore).

I used to live in a college town for 19 years (yes, still in Kansas). It was a great little town to raise children. My kids and I discovered back in the 90s that you could get a decent amount of $$ for bringing in bags of aluminum cans. It was a great way to get a walk in, see people (we lived close to the downtown area) we knew, and pick up lots and lots of cans.

We picked up litter (which was a point of contention for me, as well) like it was a treasure hunt. Both my kids started their first bank accounts with 75 dollars each by "just" hunting for beer and soda cans. Bonus!!

Take care, lovely one!! xoxoxoxo

Great work, you guys! Such a pretty place, such a shame others don't honor it.
I would not have thought to call the authorities to come pick up needles. I didn't know that was a thing.
Still have to go do my third litter walk (#2 was before you started the new contest round). Hopefully no allergy attack this time!

We live in a very low income neighborhood. You wouldn't know it by the rent prices! But, unfortunately that means a lot of run down houses and a LOT of litter. It's everywhere.

Sorry about litter walk 2, I was a bit slow on getting the end of contest 1 announced and the second one up and running. That's my bad.

Bring the cortizone and benedryl! Lol

Thank you again @hickorymack for inspiring this and doing it! Especially with your babes <3 I will be bringing mine on some #litterwalks too. You are right, so crucial to teach our littles to respect and not toss trash. Good call on the clown check too;)

Yes! One must always check for clowns. They're sneaky buggers!

I'm so glad you will get your littles involved! A love of Nature is SO IMPORTANT. If that love isn't fostered in our youth, who will care?

So in the end you just dumped all the trash you had been collected out in the park? :-)

The cola bottle picture, I almost find it difficult to see where the water stops and snow/ice starts.

Over here, the snow and ice nearby the rivers is usually the first thing to melt, over there it seems to be the last bastion.

There are a few places left that look like this:

We have odd patchwork right now. Big chunks of dormant grass and big chunks of snow cover. It's worse up the hill than where we are, lots of snow up there still, further from the lake.

But, slowly and surely the Summer King is making himself felt. 💜

Nice place and even better after you guys have cleaned it up good work:)

Waaahh very good job sister ..
You are very guarding the environment. Hopefully others can do such noble work as your sister.
