Let's talk about Monopoly...and we don't mean the game.

The two old-style West Auckland licensing trusts are community entities set up back in 1973. Fast forward 45 years, and they're still enjoying the monopoly right to hold tavern licenses, off licenses, and operate hotels.

Our Trusts are one of the few such remaining monopolies in NZ. That a monopoly even exists doesn't speak well of the local-body policy making.

Challenging this monopoly is no easy feat for the community - it requires at least 28,000 people to sign a petition for a referendum.

West Auckland is going through enormous change. Population growth and mass investment in infrastructure means West Auckland will be connected to the rest of Auckland more than ever before. However, in one aspect, it is very different from the rest of Auckland.

It has been 15 years since 'The Trusts' monopoly was challenged and we think that it's only fair the community has another say.

Challenging The Trusts' monopoly raises some questions. How do you feel about living in West Auckland now? What do you want West Auckland to be like in ten years time? What is your vision for a better West Auckland?

Without a monopoly, many West Auckland suburbs can become vibrant entertainment hubs that really thrive, bringing more business opportunities to the area and creating more jobs.

If The Trusts lose their monopoly, they can still operate their venues and play a vital role in giving back to the community using their substantial pool of assets.

Do you want The Trusts to control your West Auckland?

We think a better West Auckland can exist.
