After Japan, they are the Spaniards who have the highest number of 100-year-olds. Spain counts over one hundred thousand 100-year-olds in her country. A Reuters photographer, Andrea Comas interviewed and photographed the 100-year-olds and stole some secrets on life expectancy.

Almost everyone is happy to still live and have different ways of spending time: playing piano, going to the theater, and dealing with kindergarten.

Raffaela Pons, 102 years old

A small spoon of honey every day

Raffaela Pons is 102, lives in Ferreries, on the island of Minorka. She lives alone and her daughter goes to meet her every day. It is Real Madrid's fiery fan and her longevity is dedicated to the honey she consumes every day.

Pedro Rodriguez, 106 years old

You're piano

Pedro Rodriguez is 106, lives in Cangas de Onis, north of Spain. Rodriguez is playing piano every day in the living room where he lives with his wife, who is 20 years younger than he. Girls often come to visit. The piano is the hobby that she practiced since she was young: "Nuns have taught me how to play a piano," she says after playing a wave.

Maria Josefa Guillen, 103 years old

To eat gazpaco (Spanish soup with chilled vegetables served cold)

Maria Josefa Guillen, 103, lives near Seville with her son with disabilities. He started working as a tailor at the age of 12 and the first thing he wanted to sew was a dancing gown. Mary has a very funny gazpachon, a cold vegetable soup, a typical Andalusian dish. She believes that it is exactly the nutritional value of this shoulder that has kept her healthy.

Lucia Manzano, 100 years old

Courage to follow your beliefs

Lucia Manzano is 100 years old and lives in a nursing home in La Adrada, not far from Madrid. She is convinced that the thing she has kept alive so far has been the courage to advance her beliefs. "The most important thing is to be coherent and to remain loyal to ourselves."

Maximino San Miguel, 102 years old

Read books and recite

Maximino San Miguel, 102, lives in Leon, north of Spain. Has discovered his passion for amateur theater at the age of 80 and has since attended many amateur performances. When he was a kid he did not go to school because he was led to do the shepherd. He likes to read books on traditions. "These passions have kept me alive".

Francisco Nunez, 112 years old

Feeling young

Francisco Nunez, 112, is the oldest man the journalist interviewed. He lives with his 80-year-old daughter at his home in Badajoz, south-east of Spain. She says, "I do not like holiday homes because they are very old."

"He did not want to leave home. I'm single and I live with her "- tells her daughter Maria Antonia Nunez, 81 years old. Despite his age, Francisco has always maintained a behavior from the young man, and that's what he kept in life and good health.

Gumersindo Cubo, 101 years old

Living away from the city

Gumersindo Cubo, 101, lives near Madrid. His longevity is dedicated to the fact that his childhood was spent in the woods with eight siblings, as his father was a guardian of the forest. Among other things, he remembers: "When I was sick my mother gave me pine pie from a vase she was holding under the bed."

Esperanza Fernandez, 103 years old

To take sickness seriously

Esperanza Fernandez, 103, lives with girls in Salamanca. Two of her sisters have passed the 100's and the other is on the eve of the 100th anniversary celebration. Recalls when a flu epidemic killed nearly half of its village. The father closed the entire family inside and stopped everybody coming out, saving you life.

Pilar Fernandez, 101 years old

Pilar Fernandez, 101, lives in Asturias with daughter Pili, nursed Flori and her husband Ana. In the war years Pilar and its nine brothers have suffered the famine crisis. Fearing that history was repeated, he chose to have only one child. "One of the best things about my health is to have a garden where I can plant vegetables and take care of them every day"
