No War with anybody

no-war.jpgThere are a lot of songs out there that are anti war. A lot of these songs are very simple and say things like war is bad because people die. It's not wrong, but counter arguments can easily be made like "it was a necessary sacrifice". This is personally why I like songs that have a little more depth and really explain why war is bad and make you see the folly of it all.

To start off, I wanted to start with a quote from Tool's song Right in Two. I know this one is a bit simple, but I still like the basic question they are asking. Don't we have better things to do with our time than kill each other? Have we not advanced more than that?

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys; Give them thumbs, they make a club and beat their brother down
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here

Another one of these songs was written by Eric Bogle called No Man's Land. It was written as kind of an ode to a fallen Scottish soldier in WWI. There are a lot of very poetic verses in it but the final one kind of sums it up.

Now young Willy McBride, I can't help but wonder, why?
Do those that lie here know why they died?
And did they believe when they answered the call?
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?
For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the shame
The killing and dying were all done in vain
For young Willy McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again

The final song I wanted to end with is from Rush's song Territories.

We see so many tribes overrun and undermined
While their invaders dream of lands they've left behind
Better people...better food...and better beer...
Why move around the world when Eden was so near?
It's probably my favorite quote because my father was in the military and I spent a lot of time growing up in Germany. The song made me think, "If the U.S. is so great why are we here in Germany?"
