Smoothies are commonly considered fruit substitutes for intermediate use. But do the products really keep what they promise? The Stiftung Warentest tested 25 smoothies and rated only two with "Very good."
Manufacturers promote smoothies as a delicious and healthy portion of fruit on the go. But can whole fruits really replace fruits and vegetables? The Warentest Foundation has examined 25 fruit smoothies, including eight green smoothies. The result: only six smoothies convinced the testers.

The Stiftung Warentester evaluated the smoothies on the basis of appearance, smell, taste, consistency, sugar content, quality and correctness of the packaging specifications. However, it is positive that only direct juice was used for each smoothie in addition to fruit marrow or puree. None of the products was diluted with water or sweetened with additional sugar. Even pollutants were hardly found by the testers, but taste differences already.
Defects in marking! HERE, the Stiftung Warentest punishes smoothies
According to Stiftung Warentest, it is particularly important for consumers that a smoothie also consists mainly of the ingredients that are on top of the packaging. However, this does not apply to seven tested products. Three smoothies had serious shortcomings in marking. For example, a product is called "detox" and thus gives the impression of a detoxifying effect. However, this was not documented.
Stiftung Warentest advises: Smoothies no substitute for fruit
According to Stiftung Warentest, smoothies are not suitable as replacements for fruits or vegetables. This is mainly due to their natural sugar content. The products in the test come to 13 to 38 grams of sugar per bottle or carton. According to the German Society for Nutrition (DGE) and the World Health Organization WHO, however, only ten percent of the daily energy intake should consist of free sugar. At 2,000 kilocalories a day, that would be a maximum of 50 grams of sugar.
