Around the 1950s about 25% were in poverty according to the official poverty measure. It was even higher among the elderly and among black Americans. Not even speaking about the rights of black people and women and many other groups.
And I don't know if we'll ever quite see the post-war period again. But even looking at economic conditions, it wasn't necessarily idyllic.
Also homeownership is actually higher now. I think people underestimate how much access to credit has improved over the decades for people.
