How to distinguish between a haze of dust and a haze of water?

Now you know what I was about to ask before my previous question that was ensued by my attempt to type this question.

To walk within a watery mist is not directly harmful as far as I know, but to walk within a sandy mist is directly harmful.
Another possible conflation can be smears on eyeglasses.
