The National Hurricane Center said Monday that Tropical Storm Karen is expected to move northwest and lash Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with tropical storm-force winds, heavy rainfall and flash floods by Tuesday morning.

Why it matters: Despite the NHC's statement that the "storm is not very well organized," both areas are still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria 2 years ago.

Details: At the time of the NHC's advisory, Karen was moving northwest at 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph.

The big picture: Karen is 1 of 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical Storm Jerry lies off the coast of Bermuda and is expected to hit the island with high winds on Tuesday.
Tropical Storm Lorenzo developed over the far eastern Atlantic, and the NHC forecasts that it will develop into a hurricane later in the week.
