LONG ISLAND COASTAL FLOODING FULL MOON GALES FRIDAY

in weather •  7 years ago

We have the potential for a coastal storm developing Thursday night into Friday over the coastal waters. This is coming in conjunction with a full moon on Thursday so regardless of how much rain is produced by this storm, the big issue will be winds over the coastal waters and higher than normal tides. Coastal flooding at high tide seems a very good bet Friday into Saturday. This storm will be sitting out in the ocean offshore for at least several days so even when any rain ends, tidal flooding will be an issue probably through the weekend.

Meanwhile this afternoon we are still fighting clouds along the East Coast as the leftovers from the weekend rain only very slowly move out to the south east. To the northwest in upstate NY & to the west in the Ohio Valley skies are clearing out nicely and that dry air should arrive late this afternoon and tonight as skies finally clear out here overnight. Temperatures are in the upper 40s and lower 50s over Long Island this afternoon and they should stay in that range until evening. Then we head down into the 30s tonight under clear skies

Tuesday and Wednesday look good with lots of sunshine both days with highs into the 50s. Then the blocking high to the north will force its way southward into Canada. This forces low pressure from the Ohio Valley to redevelop off the Delaware coast Thursday night and Friday. Clouds will rush in Thursday with some rain Thursday night. Rain is likely all day Friday into Friday night.

The block to the north is strengthening considerably over the next few days. This seems to be forcing development of this storm a bit further south and east. This will perhaps lessen the amount of rain that falls but the fetch of winds from the northeast and east is considerable with a low in this position. This is why I think coastal flooding will be the bigger issues here over anything else. Rainfall looks to be in the 1 to 2 inch range which should be manageable. The storm is going to drop southeastward over the weekend and it will be out there in the ocean for several days. This would mean tides could run high through the weekend over Long Island shore locations. Weather conditions on land should improve on Saturday with leftover clouds and Sunday should see some sunshine. WInds should begin to slacken later Friday night and Saturday. Tidal conditions should start to improve somewhat on Sunday.

Thank you for reading this. Coastal flooding is a big problem for Long Island since Hurricane Sandy.
