Slowing down to the speed of snow

We've had cold weather forecast for a little while now, but when I stirred this morning and looked out the window I was as excited as a five-year-old. There is a long-running joke that a couple of flakes of snow will make the whole of the South-East of England grind to a halt. We just don't seem to be able to cope with the smallest amount - it's not true, but it has a grain of truth in it. More than the technical, mechanical, logistical problems, it has an emotional effect on us. It happens so rarely (and of late I've been living in the city, where it hardly happens at all) that we're taken by surprise by it, even if we've been alerted to it's probability days in advance. And it kind of shocks us into a slowness in response to the change in scene and sound.

It has had me transfixed for a couple of hours, just watching the slow motion, opaque version of rain fall from the sky. Especially in our back garden, which is more protected from the wind, the big flakes seemed to just hang in the air for an impossibly long time, surely gravity is stronger than this! Just one more cup of coffee and then I'll sit down to write. And then I noticed the huge spiders web in the corner that had caught and was holding a lot of fallen white stuff and I was lost for another half-an-hour.

The suet balls and bird seed that I got yesterday were just in time - I haven't seen any birds going for them yet, but it might take time for them to be noticed and for word to get out on the wild bird grapevine. How do birds notice food like that? Is it a visual thing or a scent thing? Or some other weird avian perception process?

Well, I shall be going out shortly. The snow has eased off, but it will be back throughout the day, I'm sure and even more is forecast for tomorrow. I hope I don't get stuck on a frozen train on my way back this evening, I don't think it's that bad, but who knows?

Like snow, like trains but snow + train = aaaaagggh

Glad I no longer commute to London!

Enjoy sir.
Since our childhood. I didn't observe this scene. Its may be due to globle warming. In our chilhood, I remember my school days. Every year we were playing on snow. I am living in cool area. But this year didn't feel such a coldness like previous years.
Birds are looks beautiful and lovely in snow. But they feels hunger. They are looking for food and I love to put some food for them.

i think the thing with snow in this country is that we see it as the same 'thing' every time it turns up, like we have grown to assume that things will certainly break and that because we only see it infrequently (or were) that we should not invest in equipment to help offset it in some way, it's like the country has no wild weather gumption!

It's surprising that the UK has escaped snow for this long this winter. Most of Europe is under a thick white blanket. The Nordic countries at least. I hope the roads aren't blocked tomorrow - I need free flowing roads from the airport :)

yeah in the north and midlands there was quite a lot before Christmas. Hope you've enjoyed your trip :)

Aw. I'm so jealous. It's bright sunshine and blue skies here but really cold. Looking forward to seeing the video of your walk. 😊

I'm sure you'll catch something before the week's out, there's a lot more coming. It's stopped here now and melting quickly, so I might be hard-pushed to find any to point at when I go out :)

Ah. Will take a look at the weather forecast. Not something I normally do unless there's an event on or something. 😊

Enjoy this weather sir.
Some birds use sense of smell while most of the birds use their vision to find food

Open the window and enjoy the snow fell, a very wonderful, let alone while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.

Here in the philippines, Filipnos do love snow without knowing how hard it is 😅

I live in Australia now. What I miss the most from Europe is a reason to wear nice boots ;)

fhoto money is very nice and very classy.
your photography is very good

Since last few years, I've never seen snow fall..

Spring is just knocking at the door in my region while you are still enjoying the snow my friend. I think it is in love with :-D

I remember snow so deep in Gloucestershire when I was a child we had to dig our way out of the house. We may get some snow here in Spain tomorrow. Maybe not enough for a snowman though....

Abrigate super well then, enjoy the snow, the cold, I am so jealous, I here where I am there is an inclement sun and there is no cold at all but a lot of heat hahaha. What a good post.

I invite you to go through my profile, follow me if you like and vote my ultim post, please. Greetings.

I really like the snow, because in my place there is no snow ..
I always wanted to be able to enjoy the snow in the country people ..

No snow for us at the moment despite the cold. Windscreen wasn't frozen, so the air must be dry. I don't mind the cold, but snow is just a pain
