Meltosjärvi is a small village about halfway between Rovaniemi (a major town slightly to the south of the Arctic circle) and the Swedish border. The highest temperature measured in Finland today was 33.3 C in Meltosjärvi. The entire southern part of the region of Lapland saw maximum temperatures above 30 C today. The maximum in the town of Rovaniemi, the regional capital. was 31.5 C and in Savukoski it was 31.3 C. The maximum temperatures were actually 1-2 C higher than in the south of the country some 800 km away. The far north is statistically less likely to experience scorching temperatures but it is nothing unheard of. Almost every summer, the far north of the country experiences a few days of heat (25-30 C).
My wife and I have been oiling our deck in the back of the house today. There was about 40 square meters to cover including the vertical surfaces on the edges. It was fucking hot in the afternoon as walls of the house are warmed by the sun. The patio itself is dark and that makes it worse.

The canopy has been moved and the patio has been cleared of all the rest of the stuff on it. The oiling is almost done now. We ran out of the oil and have to get some more tomorrow morning.

It depends a lot on what I'm planning to do. Today, I would've preferred much cooler weather. But tomorrow when the work will be finished, I will welcome the 31 C maximum in the afternoon as I head for a beach with the family. This is the last week of my holiday. Luckily, the temperature will fall by about 10 degrees to a comfortable 21 C on Monday. The beginning of the week will be a bit cooler.
