Good morning, and Happy New Year!
We've got chilly but manageable temperatures across the Island this morning (mid 30s). I don't expect a huge difference as we head into the afternoon, with maybe a 5° increase. The sun will be out but there will be a good amount of high and mid level clouds throughout the day.
There is a deepening storm system over Texas that will give us a few problems this week. First, it will send one wave of low pressure in our direction that passes mainly to the south late tonight. At the same time, a Canadian clipper system is dropping down. The Tri-state area will make for the a middle ground between these two systems. Any precipitation will be mainly light, but areas north and west of the city will see snow showers and minor accumulations as the colder air works down from the clipper. As you head further south and east closer to the city, there will be mixing with and eventually all rain. The latter should be all Long Island sees, but it is not out of the question that there could be some light sleet mixed in for us at the onset.
Clouds will give way to sunshine quickly on Thursday and it will stay bright through Friday. Temperatures also trend milder over the next two days, and by Friday they will get close to 50°. While they should remain above normal into next week, rain will return on Saturday, making for a wet first half of the weekend. --Geoff
