To all of our friends who celebrate Hanukkah, Weather Long Island would like to wish you a very happy holiday!
This morning Long Island has been dealing with some poor visibility, but conditions are improving rapidly. A dense fog advisory has been cancelled in Nassau, and Suffolk may soon follow suit. Roads are still slick from yesterday's rain, but sunshine will gradually return this morning and dry things up. A stiff breeze will help that as well, with winds later today around 20 mph out of the west. As for temperatures, enjoy one more mild day before the cold comes back. We've got readings well into the 50s this morning, which is where they will remain throughout the day.
Tonight begins a pronounced temperature drop for the rest of the week. Tuesday morning it will drop to around the freezing mark, with high temperatures barely getting into 40s by the afternoon. For the rest of the week, they may not even escape the 30s. At least we will have dry weather to contend with through Saturday.
Now we talked a lot last week about a potential storm on Wednesday, I also mentioned on Friday not to worry about it over the weekend, and for good reason! That storm is not materializing for us, as anything that forms will be well offshore. That being said, a very similar solution is possible for late in the weekend. This morning there are two strong storms in the northern Pacific. One of those will move ashore along the west coast and track along the southern half of the US, eventually reaching the east coast late this weekend. With very cold air firmly in place, we will have to keep an eye on the interaction between than and other energy coming down from Canada over the Great Lakes, that could help to amplify and pull this storm northward.
