Brrrrrrrr. Bundle up. The coldest air since Thanksgiving have taken over Long Island for now.
Temperatures for most of the day have been below freezing, and that's not likely to change as we head into the weekend. Expect lows in the teens tonight and upper 20s once again tomorrow and again on Sunday. And while there won't be a lot of it, when the wind blows? Knock off 10 degrees, and that will be what it feels like.
As for sky conditions, it has been a very bright day, especially considering that low sun angle. Saturday will start off with sun but clouds will increase as our much talked about storm system gets ready to make a pass to the south. The storm is certainly causing problems elsewhere, with a large swath of the country from Colorado to Pennsylvania under winter weather advisories or winter storm warnings. Those WWA's should be expanded into southern New Jersey shortly, but no further north than that.
Bands of light snow are possible Saturday night into Sunday morning, perhaps leading to a dusting or a few inches. The cutoff may be so sharp that some of us might receive nothing at all. Now the NAM brings some more moderate snow bands about 25 miles south of Long Island, and while a slight shift to the north can't be completely ruled out, the high pressure to our north is likely just too strong, and the air in place too dry. It looks like those waiting for winter's first big snow will have to put a pin in it for now.
As the storm pulls away, the sun will return by Sunday afternoon and through much of next week. Temperatures during this period will run at or below normal. Things look likely to stay quiet until next weekend, when another storm will be moving through. Right now models have the center of the storm moving well to the northwest of the area, which would mean it will likely be too mild for snow, but this is a longgggg way out.
Have a great weekend! --Geoff
