What is Web3?
Web3 is an umbrella term for the next iteration of the internet that is blockchain-based, decentralized, transparent, secure, and provides true ownership of data to its users. To put it simply, it's the next big thing in technology.
As a tech enthusiast who grew up in a home of early adopters, I've always been fascinated by new technologies. From Betamax to the first Genius mouse with a 25-pin connector, installing Win 95 from thirteen floppy disks, I've enjoyed all. Despite this, I'm not a blockchain enthusiast per se. But with blockchain being more than just pictures – it's finance, supply chain, storage, verification, transparency, and the list goes on – I see it as a general-purpose technology that will soon be everywhere.
When I speak to people about blockchain, they usually only know it as "Bitcoin" or a currency, based on what they see on the news. However, blockchain is much more than that, and I believe that the potential benefits of blockchain are worth exploring. One thing is certain: blockchain is not just a passing fad. It's a disruptive technology that will transform the way we live, work, and interact with one another.
As someone who lives around the corner from the National Physical Laboratory in London, I'm reminded of how packet switching was developed there almost 60 years ago and is still the way data is communicated globally in all forms of technology.
I will write regularly about blockchain and my personal experiences.
