So what sort of mining applications exist for this then? If it is resistant to GPU or ASIC mining, then what are we looking at? Is this an opportunity for some dual mining to happen on existing rigs built for GPU mining??

Yes, there are folks that use the GPU to mine other stuff and CPU to mine WebDollar for example on the same machine. You just have to be sure you won't keep your processor up to 100% al the time. There isn't any mining application for it. Just open your browser and there you have it, you are mining. For full nodes of the network you can find the scripts on their github.
