Every flower sends a message and carries a symbolic meaning. Not only the flower family, but color also. The tradition of the wedding bouquet goes back to antiquity.
In Roman times the lowers used in a wedding bouquet were aromatic herbs, being associated with fertility. In Victorian times the use of aromatic herbs decreased and the flower bouquet for a bride became more popular.
Nowadays, a wedding bouquet becomes accompanied by an additional bouquet, used for tossing. A tradition dating from the 14th century when the bride was considered very lucky and everyone she touched became fortunate. To that end, everyone at the weeding would go after the bride and try to touch her leading to the tearing of her dress. That is why, to stop this erratic behavior the tradition of tossing the bouquet was introduced.
