The act of the man going to the Lady's house for the first time is known as knocking on the door.
The man who is about to get married is to go the Lady's house with a bottle of local gin known as ogogoro in this side of the globe and other drinks.
The both families have a representative and it is on this day that the date for the wedding is properly fixed and proper arrangement commences.
Their culture does not break kola nut but if the man is not from Ijaw they may be allowed to do so.
The bride price for a typical Ijaw Lady include; a box filled with cloth,20litres of ogogoro, mortar and pestle, tobacco, lantern, salt, money for the bride's parent and families , money for the bride's waist line and money for the village maidens.
On the day chosen for the wedding, the groom and his friends assemble before the fixed time and when the bride's family confirms that all that they ask for is complete on the list for the bride price, they bring out the bride after so much pleading.
The both families are however presented to the entire audience and they are prayed for.
The bride is later escorted to the groom's house and they are accompanied by families and friends with songs and happiness of heart.
You have succeeded in educating me on Ijaw marriage. Thank you@yaradua.
