Weddings are ceremony practiced all over the world but one thing we must have at the back of our mind is that this weddings varies greatly in different countries, religion and customs. As we can see, weddings is one of the most significant relationship to man kind. Every culture and religion has its own set of beliefs in there wedding tradition and accompanying this beliefs is there superstition as well.
How would you like to know some of this superstition related to weddings? Let me take you down a joy ride on how some of this popular wedding superstitions came about. Below are the common one that still exist till date that I talked on:
#Petals of rose flowers#
During white weddings especially in Europe, though is now practiced in many countries of the world, the flower girls throw rose petals on d floor as the wedded couple walk down the aisle to d altar. The significance for this custom is because they want the wedded couple to have lots of children .
#Smashing of glasses#
This culture can be traced down to the Italians. This is another superstition in weddings practice by couples. Glasses are handed over to the wedded couple to smash into pieces during the wedding. The amount of broken pieces of the glasses signifies the amount of years that the couple will remain happily married. Picture a situation, if such custom was practiced in Nigeria? The couples will smatch d glasses with all there strength till it turn to a powder form, that there wont be left with any pieces to count .. Lol.
#Throwing of flower bouquets by the bride#
This is a common custom practice all over d world. This custom can be traced back to medieval time, were it was considered been lucky to get a pieces of the cloth of the newly married couple. But in our modern societies, what is mostly used now is bouquets and garter, which is tossed among the single ladies that honoured the wedding. It is believed that the single person who catches the tossed bouquets is next to get married.
#jumping over a broom#
This custom was practiced during the slave era, were it was difficult for blacks to get married legally. It's a superstitious believe that the couples must jump over the broom in order for them to sweep away there old lifes as singles and walk into a new life as a wedded couple.
#Wearing a Wedding veil#
In our every day normal wedding, we see wedding veils as the finishing touch to every bridal outfit. Most customs sees, the bride as a virgin, if she wears wedding veil. But this is actually a tradition that was practiced far back in times of ancient Greeks and romans. Brides are made to wear a veil to disguise herself from evil spirit who are jealous of her happiness.
#Seeing the bride on her wedding dress before the marriage.#
This is one of the most popular superstition still practiced till date. This custom started many years back, when arranged marriage was the order of the day and it was a bad omen if a groom sees his bride on her wedding dress prior to the main event.
#Carrying the bride over the threshold#
In medieval Europe, there is this belief that when newly wedded couple is about entering there house, the bride must be carried by the groom to avoid her tripping from d threshold because it's badluck to there marriage. Imagine a situation, if the bride was fat and the groom was slim, I wonder who will carry who?? Lol.
There are many more of this superstitions still practiced all over the world but if i decide to discussed on it, it will surely take forever but i will discuss more on them in the next article. If you enjoy the post, i will be very greatful, if you upvote, resteem and comment.
I cannot call them superstitions! Marriage is a tradition and it has tailored rites that must be fulfilled else, you can't be considered married. Here in Nigeria, we have different ways of marrying brides and while they may look superstitious, they are indeed traditions of certain people.
