Wednesday Walk To The Square For Pet Supplies. No Time To Stop For A Drink.

in wednesdaywalk •  6 years ago

The start of the #wednesdaywalk took me along this typical road that eventually arrives in the village square. The village is called XAGHRA (pronounced SHAR A) I have no idea why the language uses Arabic Spelling.

I passed an apartment block with a few nice flower bushes outside. The building is built of limestone which is the norm for here. The wide parking area on the right had a yellow car parked on it, so I removed it. I think it makes a better picture.

Schools out now until October so the playground is empty.

This is our local greengrocer shop front. A small island has a small population so that equals small shops. Despite the small size, it carries all the vegetables you could need. Parsley and celery are of course always offered at no charge.

This is the entry into the square. All villages have a square, some more than one. Normally a church dominates each square as do a number of bars and restaurants. It's a little early in the morning to stop at a bar. Last weekend the square blocked off with a stage for live music. How about the traffic and the buses? Cars find another route and buses have to cancel part of their routes.

One end of the square is filled with the church. On September the 8th we have our Festa which is a celebration. Imagine the whole church lit up with hundreds of lights.
(Note the restaurant chairs that have been left out all night. No one will touch them except someone who needs a sit-down.)

My destination, the pet shop/garden centre. Now it may not look like a garden centre to many if you are used to large countries. Here it is more than large enough for the town. Inside it goes back around 40 meters. The small truck out the front gets put away each night in a warehouse.

Finally the road home.

That's the end of the walk. I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into our world of small streets and large churches.

SO Interesting to see the architecture and features there thanks for taking us along on the walk

I may be totally off but this is in Malta is it not?

Tip!

Yes, it is Gozo, which is the third island of the Malta archipelago. Only 9miles long and around 5 miles wide. Eventually, I am going to run out of different things to photograph and will have to go over to Malta itself. Something I rarely do. It's so busy it's ridiculous. Traffic is often slower than London. Here is slow and easy.
Thanks for the upvote.

@honeycup-waters Sound slike a place i would love I would avoid heading to Malta as well and stay where its quite

Nice! Beautiful streets! Love buildings made of stone.
I like the way you wrote it. I like photos, too.
:)

Thanks very much. Everything here is built in stone although new builds are mainly of concrete blocks, except for the fronts which are in stone to keep traditional values. To be honest the streets can be a bit scruffy but it's nice that it's not pristine. Also, cars get parked on corners, 45 degrees to the curb. a meter from the curb and no one cares. speeds are low so its a laid back easy atmosphere.

I like how new builds have fronts in stones to fit in traditional look.
Those traffic problems are natural in many parts of the world. It is not everywhere everything well organized and somewhere people are more relaxed.
Easy atmosphere for living, isn't that wonderful? :)

This is so cool to see! I've never been anywhere like this and it is really cool to be transported there through your pictures, even just through a normal walk. Fantastic pictures. Thanks so much for sharing your world.

Thanks for your comment, I am so pleased you like the pictures. I will do more about this lovely place soon.

Aw. Such happy memories following your walk @honeycup-waters.

The last time I was in St George's square we had lunch in the cafe on the right hand side as you look at the Church. It was pouring with rain and we had to keep moving our chairs to stop from getting wet. 😁

You might have got wet this year too, the summer was strange coming. At a time when it should have been wall to wall sunshine, it went cloudy for a week and we had the odd short shower. Looks settled now but cooler than normal and some days it is cloudy. I reckon the UK government are saving the best weather for London again.

Sounds like it @honeycup-waters or at least for the UK in general. I think the good weather is pretty wide spread.

i'm hoping to get to the beach later. 😁

Well, that was yesterday now, hope you enjoyed the beach. We haven't been to the beach this year yet.

I didn't make it to the beach in the end @honeycup-waters. Looks like it's clouding over a bit this morning too.

Never mind. It means I can catch up with work I've been putting off! 😁
