I'm been vaporizing cannabis for around 2 years now and I'll tell you. It's a blessing. I always hated smelling like smoke and coughing my lungs out after each large pull. Vaporizing has opened a whole new world in terms of flavor, discreteness, and not smelling like smoke :)

clean cannabis is freaking awesome. Soft, cool, flavorful, aromatic and you can hold it in your lungs forever. Tastes and smells almost the same as you exhale, with almost zero "burnt plant" flavor. Each hit is the same, right down to the last hit in the bowl. No increasing bad flavors, no overpowering burning smell, no cherrying, just a small, soft, fluffy ash. :D
Vaping is an awesome invention for converting bad cannabis in to something you can enjoy. Glad you're able to live without coughing your brains out. :D

Yeah, I'm currently in an illegal state so the type of bud that comes round here isn't what I'd call "clean cannabis". It's alright quality. You're definitely right when you mentioned it makes bad cannabis way way more enjoyable. However, I've heard some great things from vapers that live in legal states too.

There’s no such thing as a combusted bowl of anything that maintains its flavor until the “last hit.” People who don’t vape much tend to not like it. It takes a real commitment. I’ve been using cannabis for 23 years, and gave up combustion about 18 years ago. When the technology wasn’t so hot. I still knew it was better. Now I’m the opposite. No number of bonghits of even the kindest bud can touch the effect of 1-2 vape hits. Those numbers are real. I’ve seen numbers as low as the 72-77% range for THC extraction through vaporization. But I’ve never seen a study on combustion that goes above 25%. Long story short, more than one study has been done, but they all say that vaporization is a safer, more effective method of ingesting THC.

Actually, from what you describe of your experience with cannabis you haven't ever had clean cannabis. I see you don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, as clear as day. It's ok, I went 20+ years without coming across any myself. I'm the only one I know who grows as cleanly since then.
So, 30+ years of using cannabis (in multiple states, non and pro-cannabis) and I've only come across clean cannabis from another grower once. I highly doubt you've even seen it in pictures before. Those are the facts, I don't have to make anything up.
To be honest, everyone (including myself) thought my cannabis was clean and better than anyone else's. This was 10 years ago. When I came across clean cannabis I was shocked. Turns out I was simply growing better crap than everyone else's crap. Shocking indeed.
Your choice. You can run with this information and seek out truly clean cannabis. You can also discount it and continue to use unclean cannabis or resorting to extracts. Life is about choices, which one will you choose?

Stringent state testing? LOL They allow spraying of pesticides. I don't use any and don't ever spray anything in flower. Do your growers use HEPA filters? lol Yeah, thought not.

HEPA is simply one step for providing clean air, I personally don't use carbon since I don't have to care about smell. ;)
There are significant differences required to grow "CLEAN" cannabis. There isn't any "extra clean" the standards of your state allow significant contamination. Their standards are a joke compared to reality and cannabis. What you're using is so far from clean it's ridiculous. One gram of any strain I grow will overpower all smells in any dispensary I've ever been in. Dispensaries are growing garbage. Without knowing what truly clean cannabis is, you'll never notice they're selling you such low quality.

What Choice Do You Have?
Educate yourself. Start by paying attention to folks like myself who're disgusted with the status quo. Start looking for information on how hyper/dynamic accumulator plants absorb elements and molecules. Discover how these differences disrupt the holy "Passive Ionic Uptake" all the organic gurus are fawning over. Works great for beans, sucks donkey balls for cannabis.
Start growing cannabis yourself. the Micro Grows section on icmag.com has PLENTY of information on how to do this. Look for information from growers like myself, there are more than two, I just haven't the money or resources to hit every grower in every state to check quality. We're very far and few between though.
You'll Find a LOT of Growers with Multiple Decades of Experience
and you'll also find their cannabis is disgusting. Unless a grower has sought out this path of information, their quality will be poor to low. THEY will think it's great, but only because their awareness is very narrow.
When you find flowers which smoke as soft and smooth as vaping, you'll discover an amazing world of terpene richness. You don't get awesome flavors and aromas from poorly grown cannabis. You'll be stunned at the difference. lol
