5 minute free writing challenge. Ready, Set, GO
Come on people! Look alive! Didn't any of you do what I asked of you last night?
The CSM bellows as he rushes in past the staff duty desk. He is never in a good mood, no telling why or why not. Maybe he is so jaded due to all of the years he has been dealing with spoiled and bratty 19 year olds. Maybe it is his perception of what a Sergeant Major should be. It could be a self-fulling prophecy that he assumes that something bad will happen and he is chronically pessimistic.
Staff duty is a 24 hour post in which one NCO and one junior enlisted (sometimes an officer or Warrant Officer as OIC) take charge of duties of the battalion/squadron after hours and records thing such as leave requests, visitors, routine checks of the area. They, most often, are also janitors of the battalion headquarters and when the leadership team arrives in the morning they are greeted by a report of what happened during the hours of the night.
Such is military life… staying up late and hoping nothing too exciting happens…

Here is a women living her passion every day. Why was it always impossible for you to see?
AT Ease! Yells PVT Jane Smith as she pops up out of here chair and to a stiff Parade Test. Jane had always been somewhat of a tomboy and hoped to follow in the footsteps of her father, and his father before. She comes from a long line of Smiths that had served in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne. She was one of the first female graduates from infantry school and was the top of her class. She was proud to call herself a soldier and had always knew she would live out her dream. Her determination was unmatched by her peers.
CSM says relax as he prepares to listen to the past night’s shenanigans. The Sergeant Major was never one to accept females into the infantry and he is ashamed to be in the position he finds himself in at the moment. They couldn’t handle the physical demands of the job and he was concerned about their hygiene needs. Mostly he was just misogynistic and didn’t want to let them into the “Good ol’ Boys Club”.

When you were a child
“What did you want to be when you were a child, Sergeant Major?” Smith says intriguingly. CSM didn’t want to get that close to one of his soldiers in such a way but was caught off guard as he had never had a soldier ask him this question.
“I wanted to be a soldier my whole life” replied the grizzled old man. “I knew I would be in one of the most elite fighting units in the world!” he exclaimed proudly.
“so why would you want to deny that same dream to over 50% of the population, Sergeant Mahjor?” she is not intentionally pushing the old man’s buttons but after this statement she can see it as his face turns bright red from embarrassment.
“I….I…. I am sorry Smith. I did not know that you were able to complete the same tasks as a young man. You are an excellent soldier and a great addition to the team!”

I had never thought to write anything like this before. The plot twists and intermediate prompts led my story in this direction. I am still loving the exercise of this 5 minute writing challenge and hope to complete many, many more!
