P E R C E P T I O N
perception noun uk /pəˈsep.ʃən/ us /pɚ-/ 1. a belief or opinion, often held by many people and based on how things seem; 2. someone's ability to notice and understand things that are not obvious to other people; 3. an awareness of things through the physical senses, esp. sight. ~Cambridge dictionary
It's a funny word. A word that can be taken in so many ways. A word many know about but few people think about. @Anutu came up with his first ever Challenge [Challenge] We Need To Talk! A #Challenge by @anutu. I was tagged in the challenge by Anutu, who I hold in highest regard. I was also hmmm...let's used the word ... threatened by @shadowspub to do this challenge also. She suggested, "it would be good for me". 😋
Honest. I do not lie. #shadowsmademedoit
In looking at this challenge, at this moment in my life, I have nothing coming into my head for many reasons. I read Anutu's post six times and hmmm..... yeah. I then read the definition of the word a few more billion times. What stood out to me was the second dohickey.
- 😇
- someone's ability to notice and understand things that are not obvious to other people;
The above definition spoke to me. It is me.
This, I'm going to call it a trait/gift, has been with me my whole life. Some of this trait was learned while growing up by necessity to survive. The rest comes naturally. It is in me. It makes up who I am in many ways. It is not always a gift to be able to notice and understand things that are not obvious to other people.
While very young it was hard to understand why others could not see what was, for me, the facts right in front of our faces. Why couldn't they see what I could see? Why did I have to explain to others what should have been obvious?
It was very frustrating. The frustration would then come across in my tone to the person I would have to explain things to.
Do you see the problems that can and did cause?
It is a trait you can learn to ignore if you want to. I spent part of my life doing just that. Why get others upset telling them something that, in my mind, should have been obvious to them?
You grow older. You start to realize how unique we all are. How all of us are given gifts to survive in life but not all are given the same gifts for a good reason. No one, and I mean no one, can know everything.
"It takes a Village..."
We all have our part to play in this world, our largest village, our home. You can then break it down to smaller villages like your family, Steem(it), your workplace and so on. If everyone would use the gifts/traits they have received in life, the village would run smoothly.
In this day and age so many of us move away from family, live alone in an apartment or house and never talk to neighbors, making your gift lost to the world. On the same note, so many people feel they have to conform to what is considered normal that they hide their unique gifts. Once again what is needed in this world is lost.
Without others that are unique around you or them hiding their gift, the world spins off kilter. It takes age, confidence and a lot of soul searching to be strong enough to not care what others think of you. Once you get to that point in your life you feel okay with sharing your true self with everyone. Not an easy task but one that is necessary to the world.
Steem(it) works so well as something community based because there are more people here that have excepted the fact they are not normal. They, in talking through type and voice on Discord, realized in this place called Steem(it), being different is the NORM!!
If you are lucky enough to get into a community, made for the right reasons, you are excepted for your gifts. Wanted for those same gifts that you had to hide from the outside world most of your life.
In this Steem(it) Village, people flourish. The simple fact is they become relaxed in being who they are. They are excepted for who they are while being surrounded by positiveness.
Steem(it) has been known and called a social experiment. I don't care if it is or not. What I do care about is, it is a place I can be me. A place I don't have to hide my special traits. A place I am surrounded by people that are not afraid to show their special traits. This Village works, on most levels, better than any I have seen.
Best of all, Steem(it) has given us not normal people a home. You can not ask for more than that.
Thank you, everyone, for being a part of my Steem journey!
Make someone smile today. It can not hurt you.
Love,
Snook

Oh this is right up my alley, normal is boring; there is nothing about being normal that really interests me. I like being myself, not what others think I should be or how I should act.
I would just like to tell some people, mind your own damn business and I'll mind mine. That is what normal should be, but it isn't.
Normal now means you conform to societal pressure to fit in and be just another face in the crowd of "normal" people. No thanks, I am still going to be me, good subject and too damn bad it is one of those challenge things or I might just had gotten involved, but I am over my self imposed limit at the moment.

I understand your frustration and how it can build up when you do not expect it, it just comes out. I worked on myself to learn and appreciate diversity and channeled that frustration into creativity and creative ways of teaching and tutoring. I like what you have said about this community and the family vibe it has, it really is like that. Being "normal" is not ok, never was. We were schooled to work on our week spots and get better at what we are bad at. I say, focus on your strengths and what you are good at. Nurture them even more. We are all geniuses in our own ways. Thank you for such a lovely read honey, I enjoyed it beyond words 💚

Yeah. I could see things as a kid. But I learned to keep them to myself and did for quite a while. Until I got old enough and big enough that I no longer cared.
The other part is you have to ask me. Most really don't care for what I see and know, so they are just on their own.
Thanks for taking the challenge. Always good to know more about you.

I love this @snook! You said so many things which ring true for me. Steem is a place where you can find your place and at the same time the positive reinforcement from like-minded people is incredible! You are quite intuitive...so often people in this world don't believe in intuition, but they are soooo wrong. Throughout my life I have had people depend on me for my intuition. It is indeed a gift! You are a gift to Steemit! Be well my friend :)

Different is the best norm. Everyone being all "cookie cutter" - especially when NOT being tasty cookies - would be boring.
Some naturally want to sing of their days to the world. Some are happy to sit and make finger puppet characters to play with. Some love crazy crowds and loud parties. Some make massive spreadsheets to track their nail polish collection. Some crave the quiet. Some are able to juggle chainsaws. All of the flavors of the rainbow (way more than skittles advertises) for personalities and talents and interests all are perfect as they are if it is who they are. (Well, as long as they don't hurt anyone. But, well, if boxing is the talent or some such then I guess that's okay too. 😜)
(Mad Libs time: Anyone who tells me that I should act a certain way or be a certain way can go _________ themselves.) (There are SO many wonderful things that can go into the blank. 😉)
Hugs and raspberry cheesecake smells. 💖

@snook, once again, like many times before, you truly made my day and made shine the sun right into my heart <3
To me It felt or sometimes still feels like my soul and my heart is shouting out loudly:"I want to share this gift"
but my head answers: "No, they will not believe, they will not understand."
After that long time that I have been into a change process, I feel like I cannot stick anymore to what my head says. At the same time, my head has no tool or method to share the gift with the right people.
So, the only solution seems to be to let my soul and my heart speak out - only.
Agree with everything you said, 100%! Thank you so much for your entry <3
You and all the other #Not-Normals are the reason I am here and enjoy our community! Grateful to have found a home.

Who to know who to trust comes with age. I don't trust many with the why of it, just what should be told. hugs

Yet another true statement.
Suggest, as an aid to longer life, mind you that would mean you talking to you longer, cut down, then cut out those cancer sticks.
It can be done, you need a reason, but it will exteeeeeeeend how long your in steemit if you do

We are still in Spring, but the days are getting warmer, average about 2- 22 ^C.
If a doddery old fella can go from 90 + a day to zero, anybody can,
what you don't want is the heart attack, and I thought I was bulletproof at the time.
It changes the train of thought for a while.
