How To Catch A Whale

Since the beginning of time, catching a whale has been everyone's (well some people's) goal. But to catch a whale, you need to think like a whale. You need to be the whale. You need to find a whale, and follow that whale, and learn the way of a whale. You need to stay clear of them when other whales are jostling for position as you may get squashed. Visibility may become limited in the cloudy water around whales, but don't go calling out to them. They don't like to be disturbed in the cloudy water where they're playing with each other; they can become quite aggressive and you'll find yourself on the wrong end of a beating. Rather stay out of that cloudy water and wait for your whale to return, or head back to the clear water and find a better whale to catch.

Rather follow from a distance, from the relative safety of shallower water near where whales come to play. You'll find dolphins there. They're also looking for whales, but are more friendly to smaller fish. They also eat some fish, but that's why you need to be discreet and not draw too much attention to yourself. Keep an eye on them, and just go about your business. Let them see you're not a threat, or food, and they may take an interest in you for you coolness! Hey they may even feed you a bit of their food, and you'll grow some more.

Every now and then a whale may swim past. Don't try to harpoon that whale just yet. Just observe... If it greets you, greet it back in a friendly manner, and he may share some food with you. Just don't ask or it'll swim away, and possibly smack you with its tail on the way. You may never see that whale around you again. Some whales are friendlier than others, and some are best left well alone. You'll learn as you journey through the vast ocean, just by watching their movements. Some whales are really cool, and will take you under their wing for a while to show you how to become a whale, or just share their food with a whole school of small fish. If you're a small fish, you may find dolphins are way ore approachable, and will have some fun with you.

Those whales are cool, and you can learn from them. They don't hang around in the cloudy water; they prefer clean water where they can interact with dolphins and other friendly sea creatures. Those are the whales you need to follow and watch. They have a lot to teach.

If a whale decides to adopt you, then you're one of those cool fish, and the whale sees potential in you to grow into a strong and responsible whale, and make a valuable contribution to the ecosystem. If that happens, you've done well!! You no longer need to catch a whale.

So, how do you catch a whale? You don't. A whale catches you! Just get on with being you, and the right whale will come along... one day... maybe.

Great advice @bmj! Upon reading your post it struck me for the first time how absolutely stressful it must be to be a whale, with everyone coming after them, jockeying for a position, expecting and begging for upvotes from them. It would be quite overwhelming. Thanks for sharing! :)

Interesting, great to hear this perspective.
