Some people give the argument of the greediness of human nature to justify politics and economy. Behavioral psychologists, marxists, etc, start from the point of a plastic human nature that depends on the environment or the material conditions.
Some liberals embrace the utilitarian view of life, that has the goal of maximizing profits in the fields of economics and happiness in the field of wellbeing. Some utilitarians argue that greediness at the base of human nature drives this behavior. From here we can see the link with capitalism and the political form of it.

As a contradiction, conservatives in America wants to lower taxes to increase what they consider freedom and a working market. They also say that lower taxes would allow more philanthropy, that seems to go against the axiom of a greedy human nature.

Legitimization of ideas, in history, followed many courses. At the beginning people in power justified their position (and the economy) saying that God gave them power. Now they use arguments that seems to come from science.
