What is Steemit really about?

Hello everyone, first post...here we go.

What is Steemit all about? I understand it’s supposed to some type of social media, but from what I thought I knew about it when I initially joined was inaccuarate. I watched Jerry Banfield go on about how to post this and that, Steem power and all that so it was my understanding this was a very cryptocurrency focused group of individuals. As such, I’ve noticed it is not the case. I think I’ve seen more posts about cats and dogs and people taking pictures than I have about crypto. Now I’m not arguing saying they can’t post Fluffy chasing his tail or a beautiful sunset, I just didn’t really understand the concept of Steem and the direction it’s users are/we’re planning to take it.

I’m going to hang around for a while and see what’s what for a while. I have managed to run across some very good posts and users, shoutout to @virtualcoin for helping with some mining issues, and @jerrybanfield for the thorough introduction to Steemit. Let me know what you guys think.
