史书有：武王伐纣，彗星出而授殷人其柄。这就是有名的哈雷彗星，西周的天子诸侯们对于哈雷彗星有着非常不利的观点，他们认为朝着彗星出现的方向，会大力于守方，比如周武王准备攻打殷商的时候，就看到了彗星。周武王身边的谋臣武将们都认为这非常不利于周人，于是才可能转变了策略，不再进攻殷商，而是在孟津会盟诸侯，静待更佳时机。
