Glendronach 18YO Allardice single malt scotch whisky.
Whisky can be a wonderful elixir. On this particular evening I found myself somewhat (extremely) peckish. I'm writing this review backwards because I had actually started with the cigar and whisky but found myself craving sausage and jamon 5J iberean cured ham. This whisky is inherently sweet and fruity with a great nose of cherries and berries, smokey maple syrup and distinct aromas of the sherry oak cask. It is a little sweeter than most other Highland whiskys and pairs particularly well with the jamon 5j ham, the sweet fruitiness mixing superbly with the dry salty ham. It was not half bad with the pork sausages and roasted potatoes as well.
Cigar pairing - montecristo no. 2
The Montecristo No. 2 is the ubiquitous Cuban cigar against which all other Cuban cigars are measured. It has a wonderful draw and is always well constructed. The flavor tends to be stronger and more bitter at the front but mellows nicely into nutty sweet flavors after about a quarter to a third. The combination with the whisky was fabulous as the sweetness of the whisky enhanced the flavors in the cigar and slightly dulled the bitterness. It did however leave the palate craving something salty hence the sausages and jamon 5j.
