The design of the White House was chosen through a competition, won by Irish-born architect James Hoban. The building is in the neoclassical style and has undergone various renovations and expansions throughout its history, including after being set on fire during the War of 1812.
Today, the White House serves as the president’s home, an administrative headquarters, and a venue for state functions. It is also one of the most visited historical landmarks in the U.S.
