Uh, don't look at mine, though. I didn't realize it was working against me until @jkiw set me straight. I was only doing it because I could. I didn't realize what I was doing. I've stopped. Honest. I've stopped.

If I've said it once, I've said it twice. I am not schizophrenic and neither am I.

I was told that self-voting a post was fine (and recommended), but not so with comments. Was I told the wrong thing?

One great thing about Steemit is that no one dictates our opinions here. There are as many opinions on self-voting as there are Steemers, although there is much agreement on the primary aspects of it, but in several different camps.

My own perspective is that, without significant SP, self-voting is pointless, as my votes applied to other's posts is far more useful by encouraging others to keep doing whatever it is I upvoted, and to cause them to wish to reciprocate, and this also encourages them to visit my blog, where they might become a follower and upvote me often.

With significant SP, however, it is sleazy, as I am taking rewards from the pool that are intended to encourage content creation, and just paying myself instead.

Either way, my personal view is against self-voting.

Since many people agree with me regarding self-voting by those with significant SP, self-voting is also perceived by many to associate even self-voters with little SP with sleazy rewards pool rapists.

While others views are different, and I make no demand they agree with me, I am unaware of anyone that believes you SHOULD upvote your posts as beneficial to the community. Folks that say it's recommended are able to be considered to be justifying it because they do it, and do not want to be liable to criticism. No one has ever flagged anyone, AFAIK, because they DIDN'T self-vote. Many have been flagged because they did.

So, IMHO, it's better not to self-vote. Please note the precision of my language. I do not say things vaguely. If I say 'it seems', or 'can be considered', it does not mean 'is' or 'are'.

I am also no authority on ethics, so you should consider the issue using the information you have, and decide for yourself - the Steemit way - what you believe is the right thing to do.

There may even be people that might encourage you not to do the right thing. I won't do that. Always do the right thing.

I'm still figuring all of this out, but it sounds like you will know the answer...

If I don't self vote on a post and three other people upvote me, they each get an equal share of the benefits from upvoting.

If I do self vote and three other people upvote, their share is lower than if I hadn't self voted.

Is that correct?

This reads more like a parody, the way you over-apologize about such a trivial matter!

Upon reflection, you are absolutely correct. I do try to take principle seriously, and when I saw on SteemReports that there were self votes, I was probably far too emotionally impacted.

So I made a post to try to confirm my personal intention to not self-vote. Sadly, I am apparently incapable of being pithy, and ended up making a parody of what I intended to be a simple affirmation of my principle.

I honestly appreciate your criticism. I doubt you could know how hard I try to NOT be a bloviating blowhard. More reminders are more incentive.

Thanks!

Not exactly a criticism, mostly a funny comment.

I "self-vote" on all the posts (not comments) I make, cos initially when I was a total noob I thought I wouldn't get any money at all on my posts if I didn't (I thought it was the equivalent of "decline payment"). But the community doesn't frown upon self-voting on posts, it frowns upon self-voting on comments, so I still do it. Most people do.

But if it was for a worthy purpose, I wouldn't mind self-voting on comments either, though it's hard to know when someone has a worthy goal or not. (For instance, some people here self-vote to help some community, or to fund their university studies, which I consider to be moral goals).

I too place a high value on ... values! So I appreciate your efforts to be true to yours!

Got some bad news for you, mate :)
Are you posting from busy.org, steemit.com, or chainbb? Zapl?

Steemit.com, and I saw that I had upvoted this post LOL

I must have the auto self vote thingie checked.

Thanks!

Hahaha!

Before I signed up I watched a sh*t ton of videos. Many giving tips on what to expect and how to proceed. One (or more) of them suggested self voting so I did some of that in the beginning too. Then after spending sometime on the feed, chat and discord realized it was frowned on by many. Makes sense either way but I like you have stopped doing it. My little .00 or .01 did't add to my post much so not going to sweat it and you shouldn't either :)

Exactly! I am kinda frustrated that the self voting is happening, apparently the auto upvote thingie somehow got checked. I don't do it on purpose =p

I'd rather spend my VP - which is always dangerously depleted - on other's posts and comments.

I reckon that's what it's for.

I accidentally vote all the time, here and on Reddit. You shouldn't feel ashamed for self-voting! I do it occasionally, although it's only about 14 cents. I get that it goes against your principles but no sense in beating yourself up for an accident.

I agree the primary use of the vote should be to uplift others.

I'll never forgive you

And, I'm sure I have that coming.

It's embarrassing to say one thing and do another.

I may never forgive me either!

XD

Lol joke. Carry on 😉

Take it easy man.. no harm done at all. The system allows you to self vote so that is not a crime. You should see some of the whales self voting themselves with 60$ worth of vote..

If anything, that is way more unethical in my eyes..
as long as you are voting for others and you sef voted, that is okay..

You built yourself to this point that your vote worth is now something so absolutely no harm in doing that..

I was a little confused by some self-votes showing up myself on @fulltimegeek's Stewards of Gondor analysis but later realized that I was trailing my vote after some curators, who had themselves voted on my post! So of course my vote trailed after them. Now I have stopped trailing other curators besides the accounts I use myself for curation. Just wanted to mention this in case it was what was happening for you, although you seem to have been encountering this for a different reason. Cheers - Carl
