The Book of Proverbs in the Bible dedicates its last part to describing how the spiritual gift of fear of God can bless the family home. And the book does this by describing what a good wife is like. True beauty is in the hearts of people, and in the small acts of everyday life; there is no greater blessing for a husband than a housewife who fears God. The fear of God is defined as constancy, firmness, and devotion; and this gift is the heart of flesh and the bond that unites the persons with the wisdom of God.
With these words, the Book of Proverbs begins to describe the housewife who fears God:
"Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life" Proverbs 31:11-12.
And in the Old Testament, there have been women who have testified to the importance of this spiritual gift, such as Ruth the Moabite, and whose noble actions inspired a book that bears her name. It is also said in the Bible that Ruth was the grandmother of King David. As Ruth's life demonstrated, it could be said in a certain sense that the gift of fear of God is the prelude to the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, as Jesus taught much later.
And the Book of Proverbs continues the description of this good housewife, and praises her with these wise words:
"She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
´Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.´" Proverbs 31:25-29.
The Book of Proverbs ends its teaching by explaining that the outer beauty in a woman is deceptive because it is temporary, but the inner beauty never passes away, and this is what should be truly valued:
"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate" Proverbs 31:30-31.
