THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS VIDEO SERIES - EPISODE 13 - DOBSONFLY

in wild-man •  7 years ago

Finally, an insect worthy of being called my friend!

Yes, the Dobsonfly is one crazy insect and a longtime friend of mine! Even as a child I loved capturing them in their larval stage, down in the creek behind my parents house, when they are commonly called "hellgrammites." In fact, the majority of the Dobsonfly's life is spent in the water as a hellgrammite. As an adult, they only live about a week.

With a wingspan that can rival a sparrow or bat, the Dobsonfly is one impressive insect. Since they are mostly nocturnal, I've even mistaken them for bats at night before. This one happens to be a male, which can be determined from the size of its mandibles ("pinchers").

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

Cool! Where was that? I think I've been shown the larvae but haven't seen an adult before.

The animal whisperer does it again!

wow it's impossible @@

Nice

Really cool and wild stuff!!

Yeah don't mess with the females they might snip off your pinky finger, nasty set of chomppers on them!

They can get a much better grip than the males! Thanks for checking it out @jetjockey!

Man! that looks scary!
Theres no way I would let that get any close to my face , some guts there!

Thanks for sharing, love the wildlife!

I'm glad that you still like it. With most of these creatures, the worst that they can do to you is kill you...

Aaaaaah. Wouldn't that insect sting ?
My thinking though!

No stinger that I am aware of @mcekworo. I do appreciate your concern though, thanks!

You're welcome @papa-pepper

@papa-pepper, that was very informative and also kinda cute to watch the proof of wild friendly dobsonfly.
Honestly I have never heard of them, perhaps that is pethaps I am not much into insects, I get scared of them at times. I am not insect friendly 😊.
That said thanks for a peak into the life of dobsonfly. I learnt something today. Feels good already !!!

Interesting creature papa-pepper, just make sure you don't send that to me! LMAO

Congratulations @papa-pepper
You took 74 place in my Top 100 of posts

The Dobsonfly. Never heard of it. It looks innocent enough. Does it sting?

No sting, just pinchers... as far as I know.

That looks like something straight out of a ridley scott movie...

What an incredible insect!

Dear @papa-pepper,

Sorry for spamming the comments section of your post with this off-topic, but I need a bit of your help.

On Monday I got the Charity Contest (generously funded by you) off the ground. Two days since then, the post hasn’t reach much visibility, despite my efforts to promote it on Steemit Chat and on my social media. I am now trying to reach out to different charitable NGO’s on Steemit and encourage them to participate the contest. So far two really awesome organisation have submitted their entries.

However, I’d like to share this opportunity with a greater number of people and a greater number of charities. With 3 days left for them to submit their entries, there’s still a lot I can do to promote the contest. Could you please lend a helping hand? By either resteemit the Contest Announcement Post or by writing a post of your own about it, you could help make it visible to a wider audience of your followers. It should definitely help and hopefully we will get more charities nominated as a result. Otherwise I’ll have to send your donation back to you, if there are not enough winners claiming the prizes.

Thank you!

Wow, never seen or heard of it.. thanks for the share bro.. cool bug.. :)

Wow! that is one scary looking bug that I have never seen before. Where do you find them? Interesting pos btw!!

These things always freak me out at night. We live by a river and several streams and boy do we get these guys. We also get swarms of May flies near the river. Pretty cool though. I never knew the difference between the male and female ones. Thanks for sharing.

@papa-pepper That guy is no joke. Huuge insect! My wife would lose it if she saw one of those. Lol

Oh man I saw one of these on my back porch the other day and thought how did a dinosaur bug get back here!!? Now I know exactly what it was! Awesome video:)

Very cool! Now you know!

Crazy fly !
Never so it !
Looking scary for a first time !
=]

I came across one of those at work a couple years ago in the operator's cab of one of the machines we were building in north Texas. It freaked us out a bit and I had to research what it was on my phone. We let it be, but kept our distance, especially at first before we knew anything about it.

mann you 'v got some guts i would never approch it great job !!

The males are harmless, the females will draw blood though so watch out. Lol

What part of the country are you in? I've never seen one of those, and I've spent a lot of time in the woods of the Ozarks.

I've seen a lot in Wisconsin, and this one is the Ozarks now too. Arkansas at the moment!

What the... did you make this thing up? Is this a dinosaur? My mind just exploded.

Gotta say it makes quite the mustache..

That has to be one of the neatest bugs I've ever seen! I've never heard of that before. Amazing how it just sits there as you touch it. Loved the video.

Cool. Glad you liked it!

Look very poisonous insect @papa-pepper
