These bugs are some longtime friends of mine..
With thousands of individual species living on every continent except Antarctica, the group of insects classified as Cicadas are incredible. I have seen a lot of posts featuring them since joining steemit and I was even blessed enough to be able to photograph on emerging from the larvae stage last year.

Some types of Cicada are classified as periodical Cicadas, which can take up to 17 years to emerge from the soil and finally transform into a flying creature.
As an adult, their size and bulk, not to mention their strong, yet transparent wings, sets them apart from other flying insects. In the summer, you can often hear them buzzing away high in the treetops. Enjoy the video of one of my favorite bugs!

I remember growing up with my brother collecting those empty shells lol. When my late father would go take us fishing I would see them coming out sitting on top of their shell before they took off and flew. They also all make a sound I think with there wings all at once. I don't see those here in Florida anymore. This was back up in Nj. Thanks for sharing great little childhood reminder for me🌞

Karen, these insects are particularly hideous to touch. Their wings are kind of sticky and itchy. They feel just like they look... if not worse. And when they land on you when trying to go to sleep, it is quite disgusting.

Great post. I absolutely love cicadas. When I first moved to Tx, the humming sound they all made was almost deafening. I'm not sure if I am just become used to hearing it, but now I have to make a conscious effort to hear them. Kinda sucks, really.

As a little girl, I was terrified of their shed exoskeletons, lol! We used to get a lot of them in Conneticut, where my father lived. The sheddings would be all over the tree trunks, looking like swarms of giant, weird-colored beetles. Eek! :) I don't see that many where I am now in Texas, though I hear them. Perhaps I don't have enough trees planted. Maybe that's a good thing, lol!
