Finally, another snake, right?
It is not that I am constantly on the lookout for snakes specifically, it is just that there are a lot of varieties slithering around here. It's not what some people would enjoy, I sure do!
The Plain-Bellied Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster) AKA the Plainbelly Water Snake is another one of those common, nonvenomous water snakes that often gets a bad rap. Yes, these guys will bite you, but you usually have to grab them first.
They are another water snake species that bears live young and does not lay eggs. Since they prefer permanent bodies of water, you will rarely find them far from lakes, ponds, streams, or rivers. The rest of the info is in the video, enjoy!

OK, I'm not quite as hands on with the nature as you @papa-pepper but I live semi-rural and sub-tropical in Queensland.
Last summer while building a retaining wall with recycled tyres (where all about the recycling!) I picked up an old tyre partly full of water. I always check for spiders (got a phobia it's the legs) and I'd been really noisy so I thought any self respecting snake would have moved on... But as I was carrying the last tyre (half full of water) the water seemed to well, move in ways that it shouldn't the weight was moving against gravity...
To my surprise (and the surprise of the Tiger snake inside the tyre) we both discovered that I am a lot more athletic with a tyre full of water than either of us thought.
We also discovered that Tiger snakes can fly if they are really frightened by a women screaming and dropping their perfectly comfortable water front homes... Tiggy is now residing in a large clump of wild ginger!
Tiger snake and gardener both doing well but with slightly elevated heart rate! Now doing more thorough checks of empty tyres, shoes, wheelbarrows etc...

Wow @papa-pepper. You are a brave person to be able to catch and hold snakes like that. I am unable to even think about holding a snake, even if it is non-venomous. I am not a coward but something about snakes and the way they move gives me the shivers. Perhaps your example will make me shed my inhibitions and hold a snake some day. Let us see. Thanks.

very interesting! When I lived in the country in SC I noticed that most ppl there dont even bother to check if a snake they encounter is venomous or not, they just go kill it...It made me sad but with time I undertood a little bit why they were so afraid of snakes (was like a phobia) there used to be a lot of farming going on in that area, a little bit still is. A lot of them folks had to work the fields in their childhood and were always afraid of rattlers, copperheads etc.-there was no 911 there was no antidote so a bite by a snake could mean death! Even though there is so much information out there these days this old fear still remains....thanks God there is so much wild woods out there that the snakes can still hide and live another day. Unlike the plenty mosquitos that have no use in my eyes lol the snakes are so very useful to us. Next time you guys-maybe just drive around that snake crossing the road... :)

Yep-I am afraid of venomous snakes, not going to lie bout that but most will avoid you if they can help it...I had a albino corn snake as a pet-that brought me a lot closer to cherish these creatures and with a little research anyone can learn to value them also! You dont have to love them, but at least see their value and good they do for us and mainly-dont go kill every one of them!

Up to four feet long! Well good thing they're not venomous. We don't have any big snakes in our area, but I did see hundreds and hundreds of garter snakes mating one time, even that was terrifying to me.

You are turning into quite the snake master there. You guys must have a lot where you are. My rule of thumb is just avoid most. I do like the black snakes though. Having a lot of those in this area helps keep the rattlers away. My wife on the other hand will kill every snake she sees if she gets the chance. She gets mad at me if I catch and release somewhere else. Afraid it will return and get her I guess. lol.

Nice! Beautiful colour underneath and non-venomous is always a plus :-) We've had three species in our backyard here in Tasmania. The Tiger Snake, the Lowland Copperhead, and the White-lipped Snake. All a venomous but we've never had a problem. I usually take a few shots - with camera not gun :-) an then let them go about their business. (Not a suburban block)
