THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS VIDEO SERIES - EPISODE 22 - ORNATE BOX TURTLE

in wild-man •  7 years ago

These are some beautifully designed box turtles!

I am amazed at the number of species of animals that were also native to Wisconsin, but had such reduced numbers that they were considered endangered, threatened, or protected there, that can be found in abundance in the Ozarks. I'd rather be able to pick up and look at an animal freely, without having it be illegal, so I certainly appreciate it.

As the photo above can testify to, these turtles can move rather quickly when they want to. (Just look at how its legs are a blur!) The Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata) is one of the common species of box turtles here. The Three Toed Box Turtle can also be found in abundance here. Unfortunately, though raccoons, possums, and coyotes pose natural threats to these beautiful creatures, I think that vehicles running them over on the road may be their primary cause of death. For more info, check out my video.

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

@papa-pepper - I wonder where you find the time to be with all these wonderful and exotic animals. The patterns on the turtles are just amazing. They do move fast when they want as you say. That was interesting to see. I always have seen turtles move very slowly.
Since I am into wildlife photography, I love to see such blogs from you. Very inspiring.

Thanks for sharing. Upvoted

I have put up couple of funny wildlife blogs ( my funny bone seems to be acting up 😀😀). I request you to take a look if you have time. Your comments would be very welcome. Thanks.

As I've been following these posts, I have the same question! @papa-pepper - Do you have any posts that are more biographical, that describe how you live and what you are up to on a day-to-day basis? In my mind, I imagine that you live off the grid with your family, homesteading in the forests of Arkansas, growing/hunting your own food, etc. I'd be really interested to hear your story, and especially how you got on Steemit!

@papa-pepper - Those markings on the Turtle's shell look like they were made with a yellow highlighter, very cool.

Beautiful turtle @papa-pepper
Always doing your thing!

I am glad about your support of local species. While most people is concerned about risk of extinction species, very few consider the risk that having an exotic pet creates for biodiversity.

If I'm left high and dry at the end of this wild journey, just taking it is a great feeling. Grant me some wild expressions, Heavens, or I shall burst. Good job.

Thank you! Glad that you liked it!

Its so beautiful turtle
I like your photo

Cool turtle man! I knew they could move pretty fast, but I didn't know they lived for 30 years

Some species can live for much longer. Thanks for checking out the video!

When i was a kid i used to have a tortoise for years.. The export of tortoises have been banned now. So now they export box turtles

Wow, didn't know that move so quick!!
Your daughter chasing butterflies in the background?? Haha :D

nothing to say....sir...

We have lots of Ornate Box Turtles here in Kansas also. Even in the suburbs I come across one or two every summer in our yard.

Cool. It is nice of them to stop in and say hi to you!

Beautiful stuff man! Have a follow.

wow. look at crazy eyes of turtle ))

Another beauty! You are lucky to have so much wildlife around. Thanks for sharing it here.

Beautiful shell! The Lord is certainly a talented artist! I really enjoy your wildlife videos.
There were a few box turtles at a condo community where I once lived and they were essentially trapped in a man-made pond with very limited basking room and none at all if it rained heavily. Wrote a note to the board and told them about the plight of these turtles and asked them to put in a few ramps so they could climb up and get some sunlight. Happy to say they agreed. The turtles loved it!

Yes He is an amazing artist! Thanks for that!

Excellent post once again @papa-pepper! Upvoted and resteemed!

@papa-pepper you are awesome!!

You are right! It is my anniversary month! Thanks @bien!

Your welcome papa-pepper

lovely animal and lovely video!

They really are amazing. I wonder how you get your hands on these rare and exotic animals. You're pretty luck for this kind of adventurous life. I know there ain't no such thing as a free lunch and you must have worked hard in the beginning to get where you're right now.
You're an inspiration to many . I wish all the success to you @papa-pepper

Surprised to see that they move so quickly @papa-pepper! The way they hide inside the shell when feeling danger is just amazing!

they indeed can be fast (not same race, but still a turtle ;)

Softshell Turtles are incredibly fast, even more so in the water. They can out-swim many species of fish and can hunt them by chasing and catching them! Great example!

we have some lovely turtles in my local creek - they are about the size of your 3rd photo one

Great post and nice video!
Resteemed this is pure gold, thanks for sharing!

Awesome post! I love all animals. You just wouldn't get me saying hi to a tarantula! Lol

I do a lot of volunteer work here in Cancun with the huge sea turtles during their nesting season which runs from June to October. It's nice to learn about a different much smaller species of turtle so thanks @papa-pepper 🌶

Just remembered - long forgotten - we had 2x turtles when I was too little to walk. God knows why I remembered now.

Awesome series. Let us discover, appreciate and honor God's creation as the responsible stewards he called us to be.

ch @globocop

I am a big fan of the Ninja Turtles. Hope this puppy kitten turtle grows up into a big healthy battle toad. I am from Oregon and have not lived there. Slow and steady wins the race. I love animals. Great video. Good work. Long live the queen and lion king and animals. Thanks.

When I was a kid these things were everywhere. Now not so much. Even the snapping turtles in this area are less than they used to be. So sad what man has done to everything. I'm assuming man is the main cause of them disappearing to this point.
