THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS VIDEO SERIES - EPISODE 24 - FIVE LINED SKINK

in wild-man •  7 years ago

These lizards can be as common as they are beautiful!

The Five Lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus) is one of my favorite wild lizards. After living in Wisconsin for 25 years, I was finally able to locate one in the wild. Here is Arkansas, they are a lot more common, and we encounter them frequently.

While the males eventually become a tan color with a rusty-colored red head, the females will maintain their beautiful black body with the namesake five yellow lines running lengthwise along it. Younger Five Lined Skinks also come with an electric blue tail, which can detach when they are grabbed or threatened.

I mention how incredible the baby Five Lined Skinks are in the video, and thankfully, I was able to locate one within hours of filming, so I took this photo as an example. Please note my finger for a size comparison. The rest of the info is in the video, enjoy!

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

I think I must. I've been doing it all life long (locating animals in the wild and catching them).

My selfesteem is taking a dip watching these post. I always feel like a pussy getting close to animals like these. Respect!

So cute! I like the name Skink!

I love those cute little lizards. I always call them blue tailed skink. Upvoted and resteemed! Thanks for another great post!

That is one common nickname for them.

It's so little!

It's one of my favourite things when a creature will just sit on your hand like that! I had a lovely day of be-friending insects and having them just sit on my hand and I'm half way through writing a post about it. I got distracted though trying to figure out discord for the first time and now it past my bedtime :)zzzzz

How many of these videos have you been bitten in

That's a pretty cool little lizard! I've never seen one of those! I think the first time I ever really saw a lizard in my life Was while I was in Afghanistan! All sorts of critters there! And of course here in Nebada they're pretty much everywhere. Lol. But once again sir, great video packed with loads of Info! Thank you sir!

Cool lizards. Upvoted. Resteemed.

@papa-pepper Awwww that lizard is beautiful! :D

That's a beautiful lizard!
Great post! :)

Up until about a month ago, I'd never even heard of a skink, let alone realized that we have lizards here in British Columbia. But then a friend posted a video of one that they found while camping, and about a week later, I stumbled upon some information about them in a reptile display at a museum, and learned that they can be found in at least three provinces. Then lo and behold, while hiking last week, I actually encountered one for the first time in my life! It stuck around long enough for me to take a few pictures, but it didn't want to be picked up. Which was probably a good thing, because I later found out that they can bite :)

There's a photo of the little guy (or gal) here: https://steemit.com/photography/@onefitmom/hiking-the-stawamus-chief-with-my-almost-six-year-old

A five-lined skink is one of my favorites. They seem so substantial compared to regular lizards, even the fence lizards.

I never seem to find them when they are that small! How do you catch them and hold them for an extended period of time?

That little man is glued to your thumb!

They jump and run usually. Can only get them still for a minute.

Congratulations @papa-pepper!

I adore these little lizards. I specially like this striped one. They are unbelievably streamlined. Thanks so much for including the little guy :)
